The Importer -Exporter Code (IEC) is a key business identification number which is mandatory for both i.e., Exports or Imports. In India, no person shall make any import or export except under an IEC Number. In case of import or export of services or technology, the IEC shall be required only when the service or technology provider is taking benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy or is dealing with specified services or technologies. It is not possible to deal with export or import business without this code. Following person may apply for IEC to Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Government of India - "Proprietorship Firm, Partnership Firm, Limited Liability Partnership Firm, Private Limited Company, Limited Company, Trust, HUF and Society." IEC number is the same as the PAN of the business entity.

    There are certain processes and conditions that you need to fulfill in order to obtain the Import Export Code. You also need to adhere to certain regulations. Once you fulfill the conditions, you can get the import export code (IEC) from the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT). Address may be physically verified by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) on issuance of the Import Export Code (IEC) and you will need a Class 3 DSC if you wish to obtain an Import or Export License in India.
